Koihime Musou – NSFW

So I recently finished watched Koihime Musou. If you’re familiar with this title you’ll know what I mean – it’s 12 episodes of utterly mindless moe and equally mindless fanservice which it inherits from a popular series of bishoujo games. Now, if you’re of the deepfag persuasion you might be shaking your head and asking yourself why I’d put myself through such a torturous ordeal. Well, I’ll happily surrender my pride and put those doubts to rest: I originally picked up this anime after reams of cute and/or ecchi screencaps aroused my interest and, frankly, sometimes a frivolous concoction of moe and fanservice is just the ticket! And it really is just that.

Other than a few moments when a few allusions to a plot were accidentally slipped into the scripts, Koihime Musou sticks firmly to the path of providing cute girls in charming outfits (or NOT in charming outfits) and having them play out a series of scenarios designed to titillate the audience. The events of episodes are scarcely consequential, the girls bear only a thread of resemblance to actual living females, and there’s little to nothing in the way of technical or artistic achievement in the show’s production. Probably it’s strongest asset are the character designs, which are undeniably appealing and have been well-adapted from the games. I’m especially fond of Lin-Lin, Kyoocho, Jun`iku Bunjaku, and Sousou Moutoku (character list), but all of the girls are pretty fetching really.

The other counter-argument is that, although they may not be realistic, that’s kind of a good thing! The moe force within these girls is strong. Some have insecurities, some are submissive, some are dominating, some are tsun-tsun, some are dere-dere. There’s something for everyone among the extensive list of characters, and each of the characters manage to find their own niche and stand-out as an individual. This is helped by the cast. I’m not sure if there are any really spectacular performances, but they all do a good job of imbuing their characters with personality.

The fanservice is possibly a little bit infrequent, but, at least in the BD version I watched, completely without censorship. Even if we only get a good bathing scene every few episodes, you will get to see almost all the girls naked at some point – certainly all of the prominent characters. One good thing that Koihime Musou does is that it doesn’t discriminate against small breasts or flat chests like some other fanservice shows. Koihime has all flavours! It’s mostly fairly innocent, bathing and the like, but there are a few scenes that really stick out as being erotic and a bit naughty. One of them is when the powerful and openly yuri General, Sousou Moutoku trades a night with Kan’u for the release of a prisoner. She gets into bed with her naked and teases her for being a virgin! It actually goes quite far in that scene, but mostly it’s pretty laid-back.

If you like these kind of anime, I would recommend Koihime Musou, and if you don’t then I wouldn’t. To my mind, this anime has a warm and cute spirit. While it has fanservice, it doesn’t feel perverted or exploitative. I admit I watched it in the background a few times, but it’s a fitting anime for that purpose. The production isn’t what I’d call good, but it is attractive and without any bad animation flaws. Overall, it was good fun and I’m gearing up to watch the next 2 seasons now!

P.S: I would watch the BD versions.

P.S: This is definitely a good one for yuri fans!
