And I don’t mean to say that the rest of the season hasn’t been good, it’s just that this was really the episode we’ve all been waiting for. This season, compared with the last, we’ve been bombarded with farcical and erotic depictions of Tomoki’s patented “peaceful” days, and the dramatic/plot-oriented content has been a little harder to find. Despite this, this was still a really satisfying conclusion to the threat of Chaos (she’s now chained into Tomoki’s ever-expanding Angeloid harem), and, in some ways, to the ongoing emotional stories of Nymph, Ikaros and Astraea. It didn’t have the profoundness of last season’s climax (although I guess we have an episode to go yet!). But it DID have a really cool fight sequence between the Angeloids, and that sequence was executed with a few moments of good animation.
The above clip is the animation highlight of the episode. While watching this beat play out, I got the vibe that the famous freelance animator, Hironori Tanaka had done some of the cuts. And sure enough I saw his name in the credits. The current guess on sakuga wiki is that Hironori Tanaka did the first 23 seconds or so of this clip. The rest of the clip still partly feels like his animation though, so it’s hard for me to say for sure what segment was his. A couple of other good animators in the episode: Ueda Youichi (who was one of the animation directors), and Saitou Hisashi. Regardless, it was a nicely animated action moment, with fluid moment, good effects and a very cool looking missile circus bit. I liked seeing the Angeloids working together to defeat a much stronger opponent, buffed by the endearing words of their master, Tomoki.
On that note I’d just like to point out how happy I am to see Tomoki finally stand up and take the role of master for Nymph. Sure, he said the same thing for Astraea, but for Nymph, it’s been this nagging insecurity for her character for so long, that it’s really nice to see it finally happen. As much as I value freedom and independence, I somehow really sympathised with Nymph’s ongoing desire to have a master. It’s not like he’s going to make her do anything she doesn’t want to anyway, it’s just a term of belonging in this case. Along with this, Nymph also gained new wings! Her time as an incomplete angeloid is now over, and her new life with Tomoki can now truly begin!
