Koe de Oshigoto is a popular manga series running in the magazine, Comic Gum, which follows the story of a young girl who’s recruited into the frightening and alien world of being an eroge (porn game) voice actress by her older sister on her 16th birthday! The young girl is Aoyagi Kanna, who accepts the job out of a sense of obligation to her older sister, who supported her since the death of their father. What follows is an amusing and erotic foray into the realm of eroge voice acting, which extracts most of its appeal from embarrassment-play of the understandably inexperienced Kanna. An anime adaptation, in the form of an OAD episode bundled with the latest manga volume, was recently released, which has quickly grabbed widespread attention! I liked the sound of this manga since I first heard of it, and briefly dipped into the manga some time ago. But I wasn’t all that excited about this OAD. I thought it would be cheap and reasonably entertaining, but not much more. The casting of Mako as Kanna seemed to be its best asset!

However, I was greeted with an altogether different beast! The Koe de Oshigoto OAD was instantly grabbing and kept my eyes and ears firmly attentive for its entire run-time! The biggest surprise was probably the high levels of eroticism. I expected it to be ero in the sense that the seiyuu’s flustered lines would aurally paint erotic scenes, but I had no idea the hentai scenes were literally going to be plastered on the screen! Given that we’re dealing with hardcore hentai games here, these visual depictions weren’t just fanservice level, but basically full-blown pornography! The great thing is, this high level of ero is (unlike eroge or hentai anime, generally), backed by an excellent cast and polished art and animation! The imagery in Koe de Oshigoto steps beyond softcore, but the show still miraculously manages to maintain its integrity as a show about seiyuu and its sense of characterisation.

The ero scenes were really arousing and the perversion of Mako’s sugar-sweet voice is wonderful to behold! If you’ve seen Kamichu!, then I’m sure you’d be like me.. I couldn’t get Yurie out of my head whenever Kanna was speaking! Mako does a great job in this anime, both portraying Kanna as innocent and flustered, and also proving that she’s very adept at doing erotic voices. I really hope to see her get more roles in the future. Or apparently she could sneak into the adult world for some work! The characterisation isn’t really believable but they are a fun group of personalities and this isn’t the kind of anime you should expect realism from anyway. The crucial thing is that we believe Kanna as a 16-year old girl descending into a career of h-game voice acting, which I think came off well.

The art and animation was surprisingly good. The style is very distinct, with bold outer lines that gives it a simple but pleasant look. The background art often comes off as too simply, however. The animation is at a pretty good standard. There aren’t any moments that are damagingly devoid of motion, and the drawings are kept under strict control. The storyboard and directing credits go to animator/director Naoto Hosoda. I wasn’t familiar with him until now, but the way this anime was visually constructed was very good indeed for what is a fairly low-profile OAD release. I really hope to see more of this riotous and steamy anime!
