Greed Packet Unlimited (∞) is a recent, ongoing manga series drawn and written by Kamiya Yuu. It started in 2008 and is serialised in the Dengeki Maoh magazine, which is aimed at the seinen demographic. Although the plot and story development is pretty juvenile (a hallmark of most seinen these days), it fits nicely into this demographic with the adult appeal of fanservice, most of which has a loli flavour, and an eroge-playing main character. The premise is as follows (from manga-updates):

“Casio and his little sister Nokia both work as bounty hunters who use magic packets that they download through their mobile phones and cast with the built-in camera to defeat mysterious apparitions called phantasms. The bounties for these phantasms are quite high, but the enormous fees for the magic packets they download and the property damage they create has reduced them to a homeless status living off cup ramen. This all changes when they meet a foolish albeit wealthy, young woman called Sony who didn’t bother to properly research Casio and Nokia’s true nature before becoming their sponsor. ”

A mobile-phone-themed action manga with a loli twist is probably a good way to sum up this manga if you’re short on words. The erotic content is limited to a couple of instances per chapter (don’t mistake this for a full fanservice manga!), but they are drawn really well which definitely gives this manga a sexy aura. The ero isn’t nearly strong enough to make this an adult manga, but they do show nipples, which is always a bonus! Although there is a character with significant a significant bust, much of the ero content has so far come from the “little sister” of the protagonist, Nokia, who is very much a lolita-type character, and not just because of the young body: she’s sexually promiscuous and isn’t afraid to act on her burgeoning onii-chan complex. Sounds too good to be true? That’s because it is! We soon find out that Nokia is in fact a magical creation of Casio’s. He created his dream imouto based on his h-game fantasies: a cute 10-year-old who’s a little bit ecchi. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t specify gender, so he got both! Nokia’s character snaps between personalities and sex (physically) whenever she is hit on the head. The boy persona is submissive and adoring of his onii-chan, whereas the girl is rough and domineering! This twist adds another layer of entertaining gimmick to the manga!

This should all tell you something about the protagonist. Despite being fairly stylish and occasionally badass, he’s definitely flawed as a hero. He plays 30 H-games per month and lives by the motto that ‘money is everything’, which makes him greedy and selfish. However, this selfishness ends when it comes to his “sister”. Even if he created her for dubious reasons, he treats her like a real sister and often demonstrates the fact that he loves her like a real sister too. He may be flawed, but I don;t mind seeing a male protagonist who knows what he wants. It’s better than having some average high-school wimp.

This manga isn’t a lot more than the sum of its parts, and its parts can basically be described as s set of gimmicks: you’ve got the sexy-loli appeal, the imouto with a brother-complex appeal, the age-old gender-bender theme, etc. But not every manga has to be original (we’d probably only have a handful of manga in that case!), and it just so happens that I find these gimmicks pretty damn entertaining. The manga is sharp, and the manga is good fun, even if it’s lacking in the area of plot!
