⚫ Oniichan no Koto… BD1 uncensored screencap comparisons here. Soul-peering penguin BEGONE!

⚫ New volumes of the ongoing Nanoha manga: Nanoha Force and Nanoha Vivid (Vivio’s spinoff) were released! Pictures of the covers and the epic manga-stack that Gamers made of their stock can be seen on the AkibaOS article here. This is an image of Toranoana’s special gift to purchasers… it’s incredible! So much sexy-nekomimi win! I thought I’d preordered them but I haven’t got an order confirmation from Ami Ami yet..

⚫ The store Sof Map is offering a special gift to purchasers of all of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka, and they released an image of it recently. Warning: Sera, Yuu and Tomonori naked embrace! Can you handle the win?

⚫ The weekly manga volume sales chart is out, and it makes the hug success of the Madoka pretty clear. This last week it sold over 44,000 copies, but the impressive thing is that this is it’s third week! In total it has sold 91, 223 copies, which puts it well above the standard performance of manga based on anime. To put it in perspective, the Macross F manga sold 21K copies for a volume, the Code Geass manga sold 26-20K copies for a volume, and the Gurren Lagann manga sold 25K copies for a volume. This is in the league of the Darker than Black manga (94K copies in 3 weeks) and getting towards the level of the Nanoha spinoff manga: Forces (101K in 4 weeks) and Vivid (112K in 4 weeks). However, given how much it sold in its 3rd week, it’s likely that Madoka go overtake these sales numbers.

⚫ The title of the new Lucky Star musical is らき☆すた≒おん≒すて (Raki☆Suta≒On≒Sute), which I’m guessing means Lucky Star On Stage! Also, it seems like there’ll be an all-night event for it. Hardcore. (source)

⚫ So it seems people were disappointed by the presentation quality of the Hatsune Miku concert that went down last night, Mikuba. This concert was this year’s sequel event to the concert that Sega handled last year, which bought Miku to life with a pretty sweet holograohic display. Disappointingly, 5pb’s efforts on Mikuapa didn’t summon that same visual impact. Instead, they just had her confined to a conventional screen display. Still, Miku fans were still pleased with the music it seems, which doesn’t surprise me at all! (source with pics)

⚫ The official twitter for Subaru/Gainax’s anime, Houkago no Pleiades, made several tweets about work on a new project for Pleiades! They posted a couple of pictures too. Apparently the seiyuu have already done some recording session. More details will come in a few days. I suspect it may be a drama CD, but either way it’s a sign that more anime is on the horizon! Houkago no Pleiades will be in 4 episodes for a total of 25 minutes length and will be shown on youtube in HD! #1

⚫ Nyantype magazine March issue is out! View a compilation of all this month’s posters here! Then there’s the Megami magazine posters compiled here. It’s always fun to pit them against each other this month and decide which one has the more arousing offering! What are your thoughts on this month? Personally, I think this is one of the best Megami issues in months, and it’s clearly the victor! The new-season shows have taken over with some glorious results: Kuroneko is looking utterly stunning in school swimsuit; Merry is showing off her DFC in a sukumizu as well; Victorique is looking adorable in her poster; the Oniichan poster is fittingly ero; Yutorichan (no. 17) is potently loli; while the Idol M@ster B2-size poster is this month’s star attraction!

Meanwhile, Nyantype offers a few gems: The IS swimsuit poster is very attractive, the Mitsudomoe sukumizu-bondage poster is extra ero, and the Madoka Magica bikini poster is superb! Your thoughts?

⚫ You can see an extensive screencap comparison between TV and BD version of Strike Witches episodes here. Other than the obvious uncensorship (which is fantastic), there are also a plethora of minor but welcomed animation fixes.

⚫ Seems like this year’s TAF is looking at a deficit of approximately 6,400,000 yen, showing a big impact from the pull-out of many major anime production companies and publishers. Good. This sends a strong message to governor Ishihara in regards to his manga regulations bill. source.

⚫ Kadokawa releasing a new magazine, 4koma Nano Ace. The lineup for volume one includes Nichijou (soon to be a KyoAni anime), Baka Test manga, and a Nanoha Force manga (a parody 4koma). Could be good. Volume one comes out on the 9th of March. source

* I didn’t get a chance to watch the new episodes of anime today, unfortunately. Looking forward to them tomorrow.

⚫ The first volume of the new light-novel series, ‘The shock of Suzumiya Haruhi‘ will be released on the 25th of May, and will have a limited-edition release that comes with a full-colour, 64-page booklet with side-story material and illustrations by Noizi Itoh. #1

⚫ The staff for the upcoming Idol Master anime have been revealed! The staff list and studio for this anime has been much discussed based on several earlier rumours and the question of whether Sunrise would still be involved after their earlier Xenoglossia anime. I thought that would be unlikely, and actually thought A-1 Pictures might have been given this one. Turns out, they are!

Studio: A-1 Pictures
Director & Character Designer: Atsushi Nishigori
Series Composition: Touko Machida (Lucky Star)
Series Director: Touko Takao
Chief Animation Director: Haruko Iizuka (Ookami-san) & Akira Takata (Haibane Renmei)

To my mind, this is a really promising lineup! Atsushi Nishigori sounds a little risky as the director given that he hasn’t been in charge of his own show before, but when you look at the caliber of his work for Gainax as animator and animation director, you can’t deny he has a lot going from him. The load will be shared with KyoAni veteran Touko Takao. Already, his character designs show a promising aura. Then you have the twist of having two chief animation directors! More importantly, I’m a fan of both of them, especially Haruko Iizuka for Ookami-san. This is shaping up really well. (source)

Milky Holmes ranked 3rd in phile-web’s top 20 BD ranking! It’s looking like Milky Holmes will be a success, alright! #1

⚫ The next issue of Nyantype will feature an important announcement for Nanoha Force! Many Nanoha fans are predicting an anime announcement, and the prospect seems good! #1

⚫ The design and details of a new character to appear in Madoka Magica, the Red-headed ‘Sakura’ (who appears in the OP, I think?), have been revealed! #1 Her seiyuu is the lovely Kana Asumi, and her description paints her as a bit of a selfish bitch kind of character! That’s going to be interesting for Kana to play.. and it’ll also be good to shake things up a bit.

Ika Musume BD changed in volume 2. Again, lots of minor changes. #1

⚫ There will be a tie-up between online game Tartaros and Madoka Magica to celebrate the game’s anniversary. #1

⚫ Bushiroad got a half-page advertisement in the Nikkei newspaper for their three big projects: Index/Railgun, Vanguard and Milky Holmes! Good job! #1

⚫ It’s been leaked out that the anime adaptation of the Bakemonogatari prequel light-novel series, Kizumonogatari (by Nishio Ishin) is more than likely going to be a movie version! It was previously thought that it would be an OVA series. This just shows the growing trend toward movie versions the anime industry is going through at the moment! source

Anime Announcement: Kaiji season 2! AWWWWRIIIIGHT!!!!!! I really enjoyed season 1, and I’m starting to get desperate for more badass underworld gambling stories. It will start on TV from the 4th of May #1

⚫ Main Seiyuu for the Nana to Kaoru OVA (which I’m looking forward to most extremely!). Kaoru Mizuhara (Gisen Yagyū from Samurai Girls) is playing Nana. I await her ero voice~ #1

⚫ The announcement for Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai turned out to be a drama cd! Now anime yet for this highly-popular light novel series, but a drama cd is often the first step. #1

⚫ The new issue of Dengeki Daiou comes with a lovely set of Railgun playing cards! I ordered a copy~ source

* I watched Asobi ni Ikuyo 6 (BD version). It reaffirms my suspicion that the show has amazing fanservice, and also makes a good argument that it shouldn’t ever be watched unless as a background time-sink. I also checked out Heart Catch Precure episode 48, on account of its excellent animation values (I don’t normally watch the show). I was surprised by how dramatic and entertaining it was. The fierce combat sequences are a lot of fun.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st

November 27, 2010 3 comments

The last couple of days have marked another step forward in the march of the booming Nanoha franchise: the long-awaited release of the 1st movie DVD! I’m reminded again at just how remarkable the Nanoha series really is, it has to be one of the greatest success stories for a side-character ever! No one could of predicted that Nanoha would go from her roots as a minor character in a mediocre H-game and OVA series (Triangle Hearts) to being the face of a new era of the mahou genre, and one of the strongest character brands around today (just look at her and Fate’s saimoe records!). Instead of letting her fade into oblivion, it was director Akiyuki Shinbo and the animation studio Seven Arcs who pulled her out of obscurity by transforming her into a magical girl for an original TV-anime: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. The series was a success and was notable for its new take on the genre: it strayed from the humble themes of mahou shoujo and gave it an epic, science-fiction warfare bent, as well as portraying an overarching, tragic story. While other series also fit this description, Nanoha is possibly the best example of Mahou Shoujo series with an older male demographic. The first season pitched to the lolicon crowd with fanservice scenes, but this was soon overshadowed by its intense story and exciting action sequences. The fandom grew by the time the second season, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s, came along, and then jumped even further with the third season, Strikers. Many fans latched on at this point, but for me, the core appeal of Nanoha lies in the powerful emotional story of the first season, as well as the Nanoha/Fate dynamic! That’s why I was really happy to hear this movie announced, which would cover the first season! And, having just watched it, I can say that, as a big fan of the first season, I wasn’t at all disappointed!
